Standards Based
Tweak
First, a News Flash! PGGP 5 is Standards Based
A Standards Based PGGP is on its way. In the meantime teachers have written to me and developed some interesting tweaks to make PGGP do standards based (rubric) scoring. I also have some thoughts on Standards Based Grading.
First if you don't mind the percentages, you could use Quick Entry for as high as five point rubrics. In Settings- Formula Tables PGGP will take any two character symbol in place of A's and B's. When using Quick Entry the symbols must center on the traditional 95, 85, 75, etc. scoring.
If you want to set up PGGP for a rubric point system, use the Formula Tables:
This is a picture of the Formula Tables with the Academic Formula tab clicked. (The Mac 4.5 already has the Academic Rubric added, for future use.)
This is where traditional academic A, B grades come from. In the instance I have converted this to a California scale.
Ad= Advanced
Pr= Proficient
Ba= Basic
BB= Below Basic
FB= Far Below Basic
GPA at this point becomes a bit meaningless as Rubric Scores do not generate GPA. (Which is why until universities begin to not be so interested in GPA, high schools will need to give old style grades.)
Note that because PGGP starts at the bottom of the table and works up looking for a grade match, it is necessary to zero out all the rest of the cutoffs. In this case I made the symbol a dash. This would alert you it you had accidentally gone below the rubric scale with zeros for a student.
Using Academic formula will make any subject, marked Academic in the setup, use this formula.
If you wanted to 1) eliminate the averaged number in some reports and 2) want to have some academic subjects you could use the Effort Only formula for the standards based grading:
In this case things get a bit more simple because there is no GPA to be concerned about.
I set this up for a six point Rubric using numbers.
This table could be set up with symbols as long as there are no more than two characters per slot.
PGGP 4.0 will still put annoying % signs on the averaged rubric numbers. Version 4.5 is shipping and has a hidden feature that turns off the addition of the % when the top cutoff point is below 11.
